The FCDO advises against all travel to Burkina Faso, including Ouagadougou, as of 2026. The US State Department classifies Burkina Faso at Level 4 (Do Not Travel). Before the jihadist insurgency escalation from 2019 and the 2022 military coups, Ouagadougou hosted a significant international event calendar including ECOWAS sub-regional meetings, Fespaco (the biennial Pan-African film festival), West African development finance events, and cotton and agricultural sector trade meetings. JNIM's 2016 attack on the Splendid Hotel -- a central Ouagadougou property that hosted international visitors and functioned as an informal gathering point for expatriates and development workers -- specifically targeted an international event venue.
