Abidjan is the commercial capital of Ivory Coast (Cote d’Ivoire) and the financial hub for Francophone West Africa. With a population of over 5 million, it is one of the largest cities in sub-Saharan Africa and hosts the regional headquarters of major French and international banks, the BRVM regional stock exchange, and the corporate infrastructure of the world’s largest cocoa-producing country.
West Africa’s Francophone financial centre
Abidjan’s commercial significance extends beyond Ivory Coast’s borders. The BRVM serves eight countries of the West African Economic and Monetary Union (UEMOA). Ivorian banks and financial institutions have regional networks across Francophone West Africa. For companies with operations across the francophone West African region, Abidjan is a natural regional hub in the same way Lagos is for Anglophone West Africa.
The cocoa sector generates extraordinary international business activity. Forty percent of the world’s cocoa supply comes from Ivory Coast, creating flows of commodity traders, processing company representatives, sustainability certification teams, and development finance institutions into Abidjan throughout the year.
The security context
The 2010-2011 post-election crisis produced serious political violence. The country has since stabilised, but the political environment contains fault lines that periodic elections can activate. The northern border terrorism risk from Sahel-based groups is a documented and growing concern, though Abidjan city has not experienced a direct attack.
For business visitors, the operational security requirements are similar to Dakar or Accra: vetted transport, zone discipline in the Plateau and Cocody areas, and awareness of the distinctive bridge-crossing geography that defines movement in this lagoon city.
The language consideration
Abidjan is a French-speaking city. This distinguishes it from Lagos, Accra, and Nairobi as a business destination and creates a practical requirement for Francophone capability in local business relationships.

Threat Profile
Terrorism: Regional Sahel Threat
Ivory Coast has experienced cross-border terrorism incidents from the Sahel region. Attacks on security forces near the northern border with Burkina Faso and Mali have occurred since 2020. The government has deployed security forces to the north. Abidjan city itself has not experienced a direct terrorism attack but is a potential soft target as a major regional hub. Armed Robbery and Carjacking
Armed robbery and carjacking are documented in Abidjan, particularly in peripheral residential areas and at night. Yopougon, Abobo, and other northern communes carry higher crime risk. Vehicle crime at isolated intersections and driveways is documented. Use vetted transport and avoid movement in peripheral zones after dark.
Petty Crime
Pickpocketing, bag snatching, and phone theft occur in commercial areas, at the Plateau business district, near the Adjame market, and in dense traffic. Solo walking in unfamiliar areas with visible valuables carries elevated risk.
Political Background
Ivory Coast experienced serious political violence in 2010-2011 following disputed elections that resulted in approximately 3,000 deaths. The country has stabilised under the Ouattara government but political tensions remain and periodic protests occur. The next presidential election is due in 2025. Monitor conditions around election periods.

Important Warnings
- Abidjan's geography is defined by the Ebrié Lagoon, which divides the city into multiple islands and peninsulas connected by bridges. The Henri Konan Bédié Bridge and Felix Houphouet-Boigny Bridge are critical chokepoints. Traffic on these bridges can be severe and is a planning variable for all journey times. Know which bridges your route uses.
- The northern border region with Burkina Faso carries terrorism risk. FCDO advises against all travel to specific northern border areas. This advisory does not apply to Abidjan but is relevant context for any upcountry operations.
- French is the official language. English is less widely spoken in Abidjan than in Anglophone West African capitals. A French-speaking local contact or interpreter is useful for business outside international hotel environments.
- Medical facilities in Abidjan are limited. Polyclinique Sainte Anne-Marie provides private care. For serious conditions, evacuation to Dakar, Accra, or France is the appropriate response.
