Pretoria is South Africa’s administrative capital, the seat of the Presidency at the Union Buildings, and home to the largest concentration of foreign embassies and high commissions on the African continent. That gives it a security profile distinct from Johannesburg’s financial-district risk, even though both cities sit inside Gauteng province and share the same national crime baseline. That distinct character does not mean a lower risk floor. Gauteng accounts for more than half of the country’s carjackings and over half its kidnappings. The FCDO’s South Africa travel advice, updated 8 July 2026, continues to flag violent and opportunistic crime as a persistent risk across the country’s major cities, Pretoria included, alongside the potential for protests to escalate with little warning.

Pretoria has no significant international airport of its own. OR Tambo International Airport (JNB), which serves greater Johannesburg, is also the arrival point for Pretoria travel, with a road transfer of roughly 50 to 60 minutes or a Gautrain journey via Marlboro to Hatfield station of around an hour to an hour and a quarter. Wonderboom Airport (PRY), north of the city, handles general aviation and has no scheduled commercial passenger service as of 2026, though Tshwane authorities have discussed reintroducing domestic routes.

The diplomatic quarter in Brooklyn and Waterkloof, where most embassies sit alongside upmarket retail and a visible private-security presence, is the city’s best-established operating environment for corporate and diplomatic visitors. Sunnyside, closer to the city centre, carries a markedly higher rate of street crime and is not a district for unaccompanied movement.
