New York is not a high-risk city by global security standards. Midtown Manhattan, the Financial District, and the established residential areas of the Upper East and West Sides are low-threat operating environments. But the city demands a specific kind of security awareness that differs from European business capitals.

The security landscape

Street crime in Midtown is manageable. The outer boroughs are a different story: parts of the Bronx, East New York, and Brownsville record gun crime rates that would be considered severe in any European comparison. The practical implication for most corporate travel is straightforward: know where you are going and have a security driver who does too.

The terrorism picture has been elevated since the 2017 Manhattan truck attack. NYPD’s counter-terrorism capability is substantial, with dedicated units monitoring a large number of ongoing threat streams. The risk is not hypothetical, but it is well-managed by law enforcement. Crowded tourist areas and transport hubs carry the highest exposure.

The most significant emerging risk for corporate travellers is executive targeting. The December 2024 killing of a health insurance CEO in Midtown Manhattan outside his hotel was not a random street crime. It was a targeted killing of a named individual by someone who had conducted advance surveillance. This incident has prompted a reassessment of personal security requirements across corporate America and, by extension, for executives operating in New York.

What New York close protection involves

Standard corporate assignments in Manhattan focus on secure transport, advance work on meeting venues, and pattern-of-life variation. A principal travelling between a Midtown hotel and Wall Street meetings does not need a large security team. They need a trained security driver, an operator who has done route and venue reconnaissance, and a daily threat briefing.

For higher-profile principals or those in sectors with elevated activist attention, close protection adds personal coverage, communications security awareness, and residential security coordination.

Licensing and operator standards

New York State requires security guards to be registered by the Department of State, Division of Licensing Services, under General Business Law article 7-A. There is no single federal close protection standard in the United States, which means operator quality varies considerably. We select operators with documented close protection training, in addition to state licensing requirements.

For armed assignments, operators hold a special armed guard registration card and a pistol licence. Armed deployment decisions are made case by case based on the assessed threat profile.
