Road safety as the primary physical risk
Thailand’s road fatality rate is not a tourism statistic. It reflects a genuine danger. Motorcycles are the highest-risk transport mode and should be avoided entirely. The BTS Skytrain, MRT, and Grab rideshare are reliable, reasonably safe alternatives for city movement.

FCDO warns about violent sexual assaults in tourist areas, particularly near bars and nightlife venues late at night. Drink spiking affects both men and women and is used to facilitate robbery and assault. Full moon parties and concentrated nightlife areas carry elevated risk. This is not a peripheral concern in Bangkok: it is explicitly addressed in current FCDO guidance.
Road Fatality Risk
The WHO ranks Thailand among the world's deadliest countries for motorcycle fatalities. Thailand's road traffic fatality rate is among the highest globally. Motorcycle accidents are the leading cause of serious injury and death for foreign visitors. Avoid motorcycle taxis or hire where possible. Use registered rideshare or BTS Skytrain.
Political Instability
Thailand has experienced multiple military coups in recent decades and the political situation remains unpredictable. Protests can occur around Taksim Square (and Bangkok equivalents including Ratchaprasong and Ratchadamnoen Avenue). Police response has been forceful in past crackdowns. Avoid all political demonstrations. Lese-majeste laws create legal risk for any criticism of the monarchy.
Job Scam and Human Trafficking Risk
FCDO specifically warns about job scams via social media and messaging apps that have led to human trafficking victims being transported to neighbouring countries. This is primarily a risk for those responding to too-good-to-be-true employment offers, but awareness is warranted given the FCDO severity of the warning.
Legal Risk: Drugs and Vaping
Drug enforcement in Thailand is extremely strict with potential death penalty for trafficking. Vape and e-cigarette possession is illegal and enforced against foreign nationals. Cannabis laws changed but remain complex and should be verified with current legal advice before travel. Any involvement with drugs creates severe legal jeopardy.
Southern Province Terrorism
FCDO advises against all but essential travel to four southern border provinces (Yala, Pattani, Narathiwat, Songkhla) where an insurgency with hundreds of fatalities per year is ongoing. Martial law is in force. This does not directly affect Bangkok, but any itinerary including the south requires a separate risk assessment for those provinces.
