Event Security in Maputo
CSPN-licensed event security in Maputo. Mugging protocols, delegate transport management and conference security for Mozambique's energy and extractives capital.
Planning a conference or energy sector event in Maputo? Request an event security assessment.
Maputo event security addresses Mozambique’s high-risk capital environment with CSPN-licensed operators, specific street crime prevention protocol for the Baixa district, and a Johannesburg-based medical evacuation plan. The LNG and energy sector conference calendar that defines Maputo’s growing international event profile also requires a Cabo Delgado awareness component for delegates with northern Mozambique operational responsibilities.
For the full Maputo security context, see our Maputo city page. Delegates requiring personal close protection at Maputo events should review bodyguard hire in Maputo for the CSPN-licensed CPO programme.
What our event security covers
Maputo Event Landscape
Maputo is Mozambique's capital and the primary venue for the country's growing energy sector investment events, including LNG project conferences tied to Total Energies' Rovuma Basin development, Southern African Power Pool meetings, and regional SADC infrastructure forums. The Maputo Sofitel (Villa das Mangosteiros), Radisson Blu Maputo, and the Hotel Polana Serena are the principal international conference properties. Mozambique's LNG sector emergence since 2010 has created a significant new corporate event calendar drawing delegates from global energy companies.
Mozambique CSPN Licensing
Private security in Mozambique is regulated by the CSPN (Conselho de Seguranca Privada Nacional, National Private Security Council) under the Ministry of Interior. Security companies must hold CSPN operating licences; individual guards require CSPN registration. Our Maputo event security partners hold CSPN licensing; documentation is provided to event organisers before deployment.
Mugging and Street Crime Protocol
Maputo has elevated mugging rates in the city centre and along the waterfront corniche area. Phone snatching, bag snatching, and opportunistic robbery targeting individuals with visible valuables are documented, particularly in the Baixa commercial district and the Avenida Julius Nyerere corridor near the conference hotels. Event delegate briefings include a specific visible valuables management advisory: no exposed phones, bags, or jewellery outside the hotel compound; all delegate movements outside the venue use pre-vetted CSPN-licensed transport; and no unsupported pedestrian movement in the Baixa district after dark.
Venue Access Control
Maputo conference venue access control applies: vehicle access management at the hotel compound entry; security screening for all conference attendees; a pre-registered delegate list; and plain-clothes security on the conference floor. The Baixa district hotels have their own security infrastructure; event security supplements it with the Mozambique-specific delegate transport and street crime prevention protocol.
Maputo International Airport Delegate Transfers
Maputo International Airport (MPM) is located approximately 4 kilometres from the Baixa conference hotel zone, one of the shorter airport-to-city distances in the region. The transfer takes 10 to 20 minutes under normal conditions. Despite the short distance, Maputo's traffic congestion, particularly on the Avenida Acordos de Lusaka, can extend the transfer time. Delegate arrivals at MPM are met inside the terminal with ID-confirmed vetted transport; the short transfer minimises the duration of the higher-risk Baixa approach.
Cabo Delgado Context and Northern Operations
Mozambique's northern Cabo Delgado province, where the ISIL-affiliate insurgency has been active since 2017 and has displaced over one million people, is separate from Maputo but relevant to the event security brief for LNG sector conferences. Delegates with operational responsibilities in Cabo Delgado require a specific security assessment that goes beyond the Maputo conference brief. The FCDO advises against all travel to Cabo Delgado, and delegates with planned field visits to the Rovuma Basin area require dedicated specialist planning distinct from the Maputo event security programme.
