  • Sao Paulo Travel Safety Guide: What to Know Before You Go

Sao Paulo is the largest city in the Southern Hemisphere and Brazil’s economic engine. It is also, by statistical measure, one of the world’s most dangerous cities for armed robbery and vehicle crime.

Before You Travel

Pre-book all transport. Guarulhos Airport to your hotel, and all in-city movement, should be pre-booked with a vetted driver. Do not use informal taxis. The GRU route carries documented robbery risk for visitors using informal transport.

Understand the assalto pattern. Sao Paulo’s most distinctive threat for business visitors is the vehicle-following robbery. Teams identify targets at hotels, restaurants, or business venues, follow the vehicle, and rob at traffic lights or isolated intersections. Counter-surveillance awareness, route variation, and armoured vehicles for higher-profile principals are the responses.

Insurance. Hospital costs in Brazil are high. Travel insurance with direct billing at a hospital of your choice is important. Confirm Hospital Albert Einstein or Sirio-Libanes is within your network.

On the Ground

Transport. Use your pre-booked driver throughout. Uber operates but is not appropriate for higher-risk profiles without additional vetting. Do not walk between venues after dark in non-hotel areas.

Stay zones. Itaim Bibi, Vila Olimpia, and Jardins are the appropriate zones. International hotel brands in these areas have their own security protocols.

ATMs. Use ATMs inside bank branches or hotel lobbies. ATM robbery, including express robbery at ATMs, is documented. Avoid withdrawals at night.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Sao Paulo is Brazil’s financial capital and a major global business destination. It carries high rates of armed robbery, carjacking, and vehicle crime that require professional security protocols. The business districts of Itaim Bibi, Vila Olimpia, Jardins, and Faria Lima have lower ambient crime than peripheral areas. A vetted driver is essential for all ground movement.

Sao Paulo has documented patterns of vehicle-following attacks (assaltos), where criminal teams identify business visitors in hotels or restaurants and follow them to commit robbery. Armoured vehicles are the standard response for high-profile principals. Route variation and unpredictable movement patterns are baseline measures for all business visitors.

Itaim Bibi, Vila Olimpia, Jardins, and Faria Lima are the primary corporate zones. The Paulista Avenue corridor is manageable. The historic centre, Braas, and Zone Norte suburbs carry significantly higher crime risk and are not on standard corporate itineraries.

Guarulhos International Airport (GRU) is 25km north of the city centre. Use a pre-booked vetted driver or the CPTM rail line (connect at Aeroporto-Guarulhos station). Do not use informal taxis from outside the terminal. The route from GRU to Itaim Bibi can take 45 minutes to 2 hours depending on traffic.

Sao Paulo has South America’s best private medical infrastructure. Hospital Sirio-Libanes and Hospital Albert Einstein are internationally recognised facilities used by the local business community and wealthy Brazilians. Both have international patient services. Confirm your insurance has direct billing arrangements with your chosen hospital.
