  • Mumbai Travel Safety Guide: What to Know Before You Go

Mumbai is India’s commercial capital and the centre of its finance, media, and entertainment industries. Business travel to Mumbai is routine for international corporations with Indian operations.

Before You Travel

Visa. India requires a visa for most nationalities. The eVisa system is available for business visits (e-Business visa). Apply at least 72 hours before travel; longer lead times are advisable.

Vaccinations. Hepatitis A and typhoid vaccinations are recommended for India. Confirm your GP’s advice based on your itinerary.

FCDO advisory. FCDO rates India as overall Level 2. Specific higher-risk areas (Kashmir, border regions) carry separate advisories that do not apply to Mumbai city.

Traffic planning. Mumbai’s traffic is exceptional even by Indian standards. The airport-to-Nariman Point journey can take 45 minutes or over 2 hours depending on time of day. Build significant time buffers into all schedules.

On the Ground

Transport. Pre-booked Ola or Uber are appropriate for corporate travel. Mumbai’s black-and-yellow taxis are metered and functional for shorter journeys.

Hydration. Drink bottled water only. Mumbai’s heat and humidity require proactive hydration.

Food safety. International hotel restaurants and well-established restaurants in BKC are safe choices. Street food carries higher hygiene risk for visitors without built-up immunity.

Monsoon season. June to September is monsoon season. Flooding causes significant transport disruption. Build contingency into travel plans for visits during this period.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Mumbai is India’s financial capital and broadly manageable for business visitors. Street crime against foreigners is relatively low compared to other cities in this network. The primary concerns are the terrorism threat (the 2008 attacks demonstrated sophisticated capability), petty crime in crowded areas, and road safety. Most corporate visits to Bandra-Kurla Complex, Nariman Point, and Colaba proceed without incident.

Mumbai experienced the November 2008 Lashkar-e-Taiba attacks that killed 166 people across multiple sites including the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel. The threat has not disappeared. India’s security services have significantly improved their counter-terrorism capability since 2008. FCDO maintains a terrorism warning for India. Awareness near soft targets (luxury hotels, tourist sites, crowded areas) is appropriate.

Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (BOM) has two terminals. The T2 international terminal is well-served by pre-booked cabs and the Meru/Ola/Uber apps. The airport express metro (since 2023) connects T1 to Santacruz and Andheri stations. Pre-book your transport. The route from the airport to BKC or Nariman Point involves significant traffic, particularly in peak hours.

Mumbai’s road conditions involve dense traffic, aggressive driving, and poor road surfaces outside major arterials. Road accidents are a significant risk for travellers unaccustomed to Indian traffic. Use a professional driver for all corporate movement. Allow substantial time buffers for all journeys, particularly across the city from the airport to Nariman Point.

Mumbai has India’s best private hospital infrastructure. Lilavati Hospital (Bandra), Breach Candy Hospital (Breach Candy), and Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital (Andheri) are among the facilities with expatriate patient services. Carry your insurance details and confirm the insurer has a cashless arrangement with your chosen hospital.
