Karachi is Pakistan’s largest city and the country’s commercial and industrial centre, with a population exceeding 14 million. It requires a categorically higher level of security planning than most other cities in this guide.

Before You Travel

FCDO advisory essential reading. FCDO advises against all but essential travel to parts of Karachi and rates terrorism and kidnapping risk as high. Read the full country guide and Karachi-specific guidance before confirming travel.

Confirm your security arrangements before departure. Do not arrive in Karachi without vetted transport from the airport, confirmed accommodation in Clifton or DHA, and a security management contact.

Medical evacuation insurance. Confirm your policy covers Pakistan with evacuation capability.

Embassy registration. Register with your embassy before travel.

On the Ground

Transport. Use only vetted, pre-booked transport throughout your visit. Do not use rickshaws or informal taxis.

Movement. Avoid movement at night outside secured hotel premises. Route variation is important.

Stay zones. Clifton and DHA are the appropriate zones. The main international hotels are in these areas. Avoid the Old City and Lyari entirely.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Karachi is Pakistan’s commercial capital and port city, with genuine economic significance for international business. It is a high-risk environment: terrorism, targeted killings, street crime, and political violence have all been documented. The situation is significantly improved from the 2013-2015 period but remains elevated. Visits require professional security management including vetted transport and close protection for senior principals.

Karachi has seen significant improvement in security since the Rangers-led operation beginning in 2013. Targeted killings and terrorism incidents have reduced substantially from their peak. However, sectarian violence, TTP-linked activity, and armed street crime remain present. FCDO advises against all but essential travel to parts of Karachi and highlights the kidnapping and terrorism risk throughout the city.

Clifton, Defence (DHA), and PECHS are the established zones for international business visitors. The main hotels (Pearl Continental, Marriott) have security infrastructure appropriate to the environment. The Old City, Lyari, and the Orangi Town area are not on corporate itineraries.

For senior executives and anyone with a public profile, close protection is appropriate in Karachi. For standard corporate visits with vetted transport and accommodation in Clifton or DHA, a security driver as minimum is the standard recommendation. The threat level warrants more preparation than most cities in this guide.

The Aga Khan University Hospital in Karachi is one of South Asia’s best hospitals and is the primary facility for international visitor medical care. Confirm your medical insurance covers Pakistan. Medical evacuation to Dubai or Singapore is the option for complex cases.
