Johannesburg Travel Safety Guide: What to Know Before You Go
Practical travel safety guide for Johannesburg, South Africa. Pre-trip security checklist, transport, accommodation, medical, communications, and emergency protocols for business travellers.
Johannesburg is Sub-Saharan Africa’s largest economy and the commercial engine of South Africa. It draws significant international business traffic. It is also one of the world’s highest-crime cities by statistical measure. The practical gap between these two realities is managed through zone discipline, vetted transport, and professional security where the risk profile warrants it.
Before You Travel
Pre-book your airport transfer. OR Tambo International Airport is approximately 30km from Sandton. Use a pre-booked driver or the Gautrain. Do not use informal taxis from outside the terminal building. The N3 highway route into Sandton is generally safe; follow your driver’s current routing preference based on conditions.
Know your accommodation zone. Sandton and Rosebank offer the best concentration of international hotels within a manageable security perimeter. The Johannesburg CBD has limited appropriate accommodation for corporate visitors.
Medical and evacuation insurance. Johannesburg’s private hospitals are capable of handling most medical emergencies. Trauma care is available. Confirm insurance covers South Africa with no exclusion for high-crime incidents.
On the Ground
Transport. Use your pre-booked driver or Uber for all movement. The Gautrain is appropriate for the airport-Sandton corridor. Do not walk outside hotel premises in non-commercial areas, particularly at night. Keep car doors locked and windows up in traffic.
Stay zones. Sandton, Rosebank, Melrose, and Morningside are appropriate. Parkhurst and Greenside are manageable with awareness. The Johannesburg CBD, Soweto, and Alexandra should not be on unaccompanied corporate itineraries.
Vehicle security. Do not leave bags, laptops, or valuables visible in parked vehicles. Smash-and-grab theft is common even in secure parking areas. Park in attended or underground car parks where possible.
ATMs. Use ATMs inside bank branches or shopping centres rather than street-facing machines. ATM fraud and physical robbery at ATMs are documented.
