  • Jakarta Travel Safety Guide: What to Know Before You Go

Jakarta is Indonesia’s capital and the commercial, financial, and governmental centre of Southeast Asia’s largest economy. It is an important business destination for companies with Indonesian operations or regional Southeast Asian strategies.

Before You Travel

Traffic planning is security planning. Jakarta’s traffic is not an inconvenience — it is an operational variable that affects every schedule and contingency plan. Build 2-3x normal journey time buffers for all peak-hour movements.

FCDO advisory check. FCDO rates Indonesia as Level 2 overall with a high terrorism warning.

Visa. Indonesia offers visa-on-arrival for many nationalities for 30 days. eVisa available through imigrasi.go.id.

Vaccinations. Hepatitis A and typhoid are recommended. Dengue fever exists in Indonesia.

On the Ground

Transport. Pre-booked Gojek or Grab is the appropriate option for corporate movement. Hotel-provided transport for airport transfers. The MRT covers the main Sudirman-SCBD corridor.

Stay zones. SCBD, Sudirman, Kuningan, and Menteng are appropriate. International hotel brands in these areas have good security infrastructure.

Flooding. Jakarta is subject to flooding, particularly January-March (wet season). Flooding can cut off roads and disrupt movement significantly.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Jakarta is Indonesia’s commercial capital and broadly manageable for business visitors in the SCBD, Sudirman, Kuningan, and Menteng corridors. Terrorism risk from Islamist extremist groups is real but has reduced significantly since the 2016 attacks. Traffic is one of the world’s worst. Road accidents and petty theft are the most frequent concerns for corporate visitors. A pre-booked driver is essential.

Indonesia has experienced multiple Islamist terrorist attacks, including the 2016 Jakarta attacks near the Sarinah shopping centre and multiple church bombings. The threat has reduced since Indonesian security forces degraded key networks. FCDO maintains a high terrorism warning for Indonesia and specifically flags the risk in major cities. Awareness near crowded venues, embassies, and houses of worship remains appropriate.

Jakarta traffic is severe to the point of being operationally significant. Journey times are unpredictable and can be 3-4x longer during peak hours (7-9am, 5-8pm). Build substantial time buffers into all schedules. Soekarno-Hatta Airport to the SCBD can take 45 minutes at 11pm or over 3 hours at 5pm.

The SCBD (South Central Business District), Sudirman, Kuningan, and Menteng are the established corporate zones. Major international hotel brands are concentrated here. Avoid Tanah Abang and Pluit at night.

Jakarta has adequate private medical infrastructure. MRCCC Siloam Hospital, RS Pondok Indah, and Medistra Hospital are among the facilities used by expatriates. For serious or complex medical cases, Singapore is the evacuation destination. Medical evacuation insurance with Singapore evacuation capability is recommended for extended assignments.
