Istanbul Travel Safety Guide: What to Know Before You Go
Practical travel safety guide for Istanbul, Turkey. Pre-trip security checklist, transport, accommodation, medical, communications, and emergency protocols for business travellers.
Istanbul sits at the intersection of Europe and Asia and is Turkey’s commercial, cultural, and logistical hub. It is one of the world’s most visited cities and an important regional business centre for Central Asia, the Middle East, and Eastern Europe. The security environment is elevated compared to Western European capitals but manageable for professional corporate visits.
Before You Travel
FCDO advisory check. FCDO rates Turkey overall as high terrorism threat. Istanbul-specific guidance is included. US State Dept rates Turkey Level 2. Check within 48 hours of departure for any changes.
Understand the airport configuration. Istanbul has two airports: Istanbul Airport (IST) on the European side, now the main international hub, and Sabiha Gokcen (SAW) on the Asian side, used by low-cost carriers. Confirm which airport your flight uses and book transport accordingly. The drive between them is 90+ minutes in traffic.
Currency. The Turkish lira is subject to significant fluctuation. Inform your bank before travel. Currency exchange at the airport is more expensive than in-city exchange offices (doviz). Credit cards are widely accepted in business districts.
On the Ground
Transport. Official metered taxis and the ITT taxi app are reliable. Uber operates in Istanbul. The metro and tram system is functional for daytime movement in tourist and business areas. Keep bags secure on public transport.
Stay zones. Besiktas, Levent, Maslak, and Sisli are appropriate. Beyoglu and Taksim are functional with awareness. Sultanahmet is manageable during the day for tourist visits but carries higher theft risk and was a previous attack target.
Demonstrations. Monitor Turkish media or follow your embassy’s advisory updates. Taksim Square has historically been a demonstration focal point.
Health. Turkey has adequate private medical facilities in Istanbul. Private hospitals including Acibadem and American Hospital Istanbul provide international-standard care. Confirm your travel insurance covers Turkey.
