  • Bangkok Travel Safety Guide: What to Know Before You Go

Bangkok is Thailand’s capital and the country’s dominant commercial and logistical hub. For most business visitors, Bangkok presents a manageable security environment with specific legal and political considerations that differ from Western norms.

Before You Travel

Understand the lese-majeste law. This is the most important legal preparation for Bangkok. Any comment that could be construed as critical of the Thai monarchy is a criminal offence. This includes social media posts, even made before arrival, if they can be attributed to you in Thailand. Brief your team and exercise discretion.

FCDO advisory check. FCDO rates Thailand as generally low risk for crime but notes terrorism risk in the Deep South (southern border provinces) which does not apply to Bangkok.

Visa. Thailand offers visa exemption for many nationalities for stays of 30-60 days. Confirm for your nationality.

On the Ground

Transport. The BTS Skytrain and MRT Metro cover central Bangkok effectively. Grab (the regional Uber equivalent) is reliable for point-to-point movement. Metered taxis are widely available.

Scams. Bangkok has well-documented tourist scams including gem scams, tuk-tuk tours to closed temples, and fake taxi overcharging. Use only metered taxis or app-based transport.

Heat. Bangkok is hot and humid year-round. The hot season (March-May) can see temperatures over 40C. Stay hydrated.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Bangkok is one of the more manageable cities in this network for standard business travel. Violent crime against foreigners is relatively rare. The primary concerns are political instability (Thailand has experienced multiple coups since 2006), scams targeting tourists, road safety, and the strict lese-majeste laws that create legal risk for visitors who comment publicly on the monarchy.

Thailand returned to civilian government following elections in 2023, though the military’s political influence remains significant. Political demonstrations can occur in Bangkok, concentrated in areas including the Democracy Monument and Government House. These are generally manageable with awareness. Monitor local news if visiting during politically sensitive periods.

Thailand’s lese-majeste law (Section 112) criminalises criticism of the monarchy and carries sentences of up to 15 years imprisonment. It applies to foreign nationals. Do not make any negative comments about the Thai royal family in public, on social media, or in conversations that could be overheard. This is a genuine legal risk that previous visitors have experienced.

Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK) is served by the Airport Rail Link to central Bangkok (45 minutes to Phaya Thai station), metered taxis from the official taxi queue on level 1, and pre-booked hotel transfers. Don’t use touts inside the terminal. Metered taxis from the official queue are reliable and inexpensive. Uber/Bolt/Grab all operate in Bangkok.

Bangkok has Southeast Asia’s best private medical infrastructure. Bumrungrad International Hospital, Bangkok Hospital, and Samitivej Hospital are internationally accredited facilities with English-speaking staff. Travel insurance covering Bangkok is generally straightforward.
