N’Djamena is the capital of Chad and a significant hub for Sahel security diplomacy, hydrocarbons sector activity and UN and humanitarian coordination in the Lake Chad Basin. ExxonMobil, Glencore and CNPC operate major oil assets in the Chad Basin, the MNJTF’s regional counter-terrorism headquarters is located in the city, and substantial UNHCR, WFP and ICRC country offices generate a regular programme of coordination meetings. The FCDO Chad travel advice (2026) rates the country at high risk, with Boko Haram and ISWAP activity in the Lake Chad Basin, border-area instability and the transitional political context following the death of President Idriss Deby in April 2021 as the primary concerns for event planners. The US State Department classifies Chad at Level 3 (Reconsider Travel).
The N’Djamena event security environment
The Ambassades district along Avenue Charles de Gaulle is the most manageable area of N’Djamena for international events, and the Radisson Blu N’Djamena is the standard venue for corporate and diplomatic conferences. Presidential security services will be present at any event involving Chadian government ministers, and advance coordination with those services is an operational requirement. The FCDO advises against all travel to areas within 30 kilometres of the borders with Libya, Niger, Sudan and the CAR, and event delegates must not transit through those zones.
