Turkey faces active terrorist threats from PKK/TAK (Kurdistan Workers’ Party affiliate) and residual ISIS capability. Istanbul has been hit by both. The Reina nightclub attack in 2017 killed 39 people at a location that was hosting a New Year’s event. The Ataturk Airport attack in 2016 killed 45. These are not historical footnotes; they inform current security planning.

The threat environment in Istanbul is not so high that corporate events cannot operate. Turkish security forces have disrupted multiple planned attacks. The city’s security infrastructure has been upgraded significantly since 2016. But the terrorism risk is real and must be addressed directly in the security plan.

Both PKK/TAK and ISIS have conducted attacks in Istanbul. The FCDO terrorism advisory for Turkey is SEVERE. This does not mean events cannot be held safely, but it does mean the threat must be addressed in the security plan rather than assumed to be background noise.

Istanbul’s five-star hotel convention centres in Nisantasi, Levent, and Besiktas have reasonably developed security infrastructure. Events in these venues benefit from existing CCTV, controlled vehicle access, and professional venue security teams. We assess each venue independently; general hotel ratings are not a proxy for security provision.

For most corporate conferences with no specific threat indicators, the standard provision is professionally trained unarmed security with access control, venue assessment, and emergency planning. Armed close protection is recommended for individually identified high-risk principals (senior government officials, executives with specific threat history, HNWI clients with publicly known wealth).
