Event Security in Bogota

Bogota has undergone a genuine security transformation since the FARC peace process. The city that was effectively off the international conference circuit 20 years ago now hosts investment forums, technology conferences, and regional summits. The security environment is manageable. It is not low risk.

The current environment

Criminal groups including dissident FARC factions and urban criminal organisations maintain active kidnapping and extortion capability in Colombia. Bogota’s crime rate, while improved, remains elevated by international standards. The risk to corporate events is primarily from opportunistic targeting of identifiable high-value individuals rather than mass-casualty attacks.

For international executives, the specific risk factors are: public announcement of attendance at a named event, predictable transport routes, and the visibility that comes with being a foreign executive in a Latin American business environment. These risks are manageable with appropriate planning.

Planning for Bogota

The corporate event zones in Bogota (Zona Rosa, El Nogal, Chapinero Alto) have relatively good security infrastructure. Outside these zones, assessment becomes more important.

Transport security is the single most important element of a Bogota event security plan. The transfer from El Dorado airport to the hotel, and the daily hotel-to-venue run, are the primary vulnerability windows.
