Close Protection in Kathmandu
Planning travel to Kathmandu? Speak with a security consultant.
Kathmandu is the capital of Nepal, a landlocked country of 30 million people between China and India. It is the base for development organisations, NGOs, and a growing corporate sector connected to regional infrastructure projects, hydropower development, and tourism infrastructure.
FCDO advises normal security precautions in Kathmandu with specific guidance on bandhs, political demonstrations, and earthquake preparedness. The city’s elevated risk rating reflects operational disruption risk more than direct violence risk.
Political disruption as the primary risk
Nepal’s political system has produced regular government changes, protest activity, and bandh calls over the past decade. A bandh affects the entire city. Vehicle movement stops. Businesses close. Airport access may be blocked. For corporate visitors with tight schedules, a bandh can derail entire assignments.
The practical response is planning flexibility: building extra time into itineraries, identifying accommodation near key meeting locations to reduce transport dependency, and maintaining a bandh watch through local contacts or a vetted driver who monitors political signals.
Earthquake preparedness
Nepal’s vulnerability to major earthquakes is not theoretical. The 2015 Gorkha earthquake killed 9,000 people, displaced 2.8 million, and caused damage estimated at over USD 7 billion. Kathmandu’s older commercial and residential buildings carry specific structural risk.
For corporate visitors, this means accommodation selection matters beyond comfort and price. International hotel chains in Lazimpat and the Thamel area have generally higher construction standards. Identifying exits and open areas on arrival is a basic precaution that costs nothing.
Our network in Kathmandu
We maintain vetted operators in Kathmandu with current registration under Nepal’s private security framework. Operators are selected for Kathmandu-specific knowledge including political geography awareness, bandh response protocols, and familiarity with the development sector operating environment.
Threat Profile
Political Strikes and Bandhs
Nepal's political parties and trade unions call bandhs (general strikes) that shut transport networks, close businesses, and restrict movement across the city. Bandhs can be called with short notice. During a bandh, vehicle movement is often blocked by demonstrators and non-compliant vehicles have been attacked. Source: FCDO Nepal travel advice, April 2026.
Earthquake Risk
Kathmandu sits in a seismically active zone. The 2015 earthquake caused approximately 9,000 deaths and widespread structural damage. Building codes are inconsistently applied. Many structures in the older city and commercial areas do not meet modern seismic standards. Emergency evacuation planning is part of any Kathmandu security assessment.
Petty Crime in Tourist Areas
Thamel, Boudha, and Pashupatinath areas experience consistent pickpocketing, bag snatching, and credit card skimming targeting foreign nationals. The high concentration of tourists creates a target-rich environment for opportunistic criminals.
Protest Activity
Demonstrations are common in Kathmandu and occasionally turn violent. Protests around political transitions, government decisions, and ethnic/regional issues can cause road closures and access restrictions to central areas. Security forces have used tear gas and batons to disperse gatherings.
Road Safety
Kathmandu's road network is congested, poorly maintained, and operated without consistent enforcement of traffic law. Road accidents involving foreign nationals are a significant cause of injury. Night driving outside established routes carries additional risk.

Firearms Policy
Armed private security is tightly controlled in Nepal. The Security Personnel and Private Security Organizations Act 2017 governs the sector. Armed security requires specific police coordination and authorisation. Most corporate close protection in Kathmandu is unarmed with police liaison available for higher-risk assignments.
Licensing
All private security companies must be registered under the 2017 Act. Individual operators require certification. The framework is relatively well-structured compared to some comparable markets.
Foreign Operators
Foreign security companies must operate through registered Nepali firms. Direct foreign operation is not permitted. Foreign security consultants are accepted in the development and corporate sectors but must work within this framework and register appropriately.

Important Warnings
- If a bandh is announced, do not plan vehicle movement. Plan around bandh dates by booking additional accommodation nights where necessary.
- Trekking-related activity outside the Kathmandu Valley carries separate risks including altitude sickness, mountain rescue dependency, and in some areas security concerns in remoter districts.
- Nepal's earthquake preparedness infrastructure is limited. Identify building exits and open spaces at your accommodation on arrival.
- Airport taxis are a persistent scam vector. Pre-booked private transport is the correct option from Tribhuvan International Airport.
