Planning travel to Erbil? Speak with a security consultant.
Erbil (also written Irbil or Arbil) is the capital of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq (KRI) and one of the world’s oldest continuously inhabited cities. It serves as the administrative and commercial hub for the KRI’s substantial oil and gas sector, hosting the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG), international oil companies including BP, TotalEnergies, and DNO, and a significant NGO and diplomatic presence. Erbil is substantially more stable than the rest of Iraq, but the surrounding region and the Iraq-Syria border area retain a very high threat profile.
FCDO advisory and KRI context
The FCDO advises against all travel to Iraq with the exception of the Kurdistan Region, for which it advises against all but essential travel. This distinction is operationally important: Erbil has experienced periodic rocket and drone attacks directed at the US Consulate and international coalition military presence, and the threat from Iran-aligned militia groups is assessed as ongoing. Erbil International Airport has been targeted. Source: FCDO Iraq travel advice (2026). US State Department Level 4 Do Not Travel advisory for Iraq (Level 3 for Kurdistan Region) (2026).
Oil sector and business context
The KRG’s oil sector is the primary driver of international business travel to Erbil. The Bazian, Taq Taq, and Shaikan fields have attracted long-term international operator presence. Project finance, legal, and technical visitors move regularly between Erbil, Dubai, and London. KRG political dynamics, including disputes with Baghdad over oil revenue sharing and customs revenues, affect the business environment and should be monitored by any principal engaged in contract or licensing discussions with the KRG.

Threat Profile
Rocket and Drone Attacks
Iran-aligned militia groups have conducted rocket and drone attacks against targets in Erbil, including Erbil International Airport, the US Consulate, and coalition military facilities. Attacks have occurred without warning and have caused casualties. The threat is assessed as ongoing. Source: FCDO Iraq travel advice (2026); US State Department Iraq advisory (2026).
Kidnapping
The Kurdistan Region has a lower kidnapping incidence than the rest of Iraq, but the risk is not zero. Criminal and politically motivated kidnap affecting international nationals has occurred in the KRI. Kidnap-for-ransom operations by criminal groups and politically motivated targeting by militia actors are both documented threats in the broader region.
Terrorism and Cross-Border Spill
Despite the military defeat of ISIL's territorial caliphate, ISIL retains insurgent capability in areas near the KRI borders, including the Sinjar region and areas south of the KRI administrative boundary. Attacks on Kurdish military positions have continued. The Erbil city centre itself has a more controlled security environment than border areas, but the regional threat cannot be discounted.
