Planning travel to Conakry? Speak with a security consultant.
Conakry is the capital of Guinea and the country’s primary port and commercial hub. Situated on a narrow peninsula extending into the Atlantic Ocean, the city has approximately 3 million people in a geography that creates chronic traffic congestion and limits movement options. Guinea is one of West Africa’s most resource-rich countries and one of its most politically unstable.
The mining sector context
Guinea holds the world’s largest bauxite reserves (the raw material for aluminium), significant iron ore deposits centred on the Simandou range in the southeast, and meaningful gold and diamond production. This resource wealth has made Guinea a destination for international mining investment despite consistent political instability. The current activity around Simandou — one of the world’s most significant undeveloped iron ore projects — is driving a new wave of international business visits.
Military governance and business risk
The 2021 military coup removed a president who had controversially amended the constitution to extend his rule. The new military government has its own approach to the mining sector, renegotiating contracts and asserting state interests. For companies with active operations or projects in Guinea, the relationship with the CNRD military government and its commercial priorities is the central business risk variable — alongside the physical security environment.

Threat Profile
Political Instability and Military Rule
Guinea has been under military rule since the September 2021 coup that removed President Alpha Conde. The transitional military government (CNRD) under Colonel Mamadi Doumbouya suspended the constitution and has extended the transition timeline. Political demonstrations against military rule have been violently dispersed. The political situation remains fundamentally unstable. Source: FCDO Guinea travel advice; ACLED Guinea conflict data.
Crime and Armed Robbery
Armed robbery, carjacking, and opportunistic crime are documented in Conakry. The risk is highest after dark, at the airport approach road, and in peripheral city areas. Pre-booked vetted transport is essential for all movement.
Civil Unrest
Political demonstrations and civil disturbances occur in Conakry, with particular concentration in the Ratoma commune and around the Grand Mosque area. Security forces have used live rounds on demonstrators. Avoid all demonstrations and political gatherings.
Infrastructure Risk
Conakry has very limited reliable infrastructure: frequent power cuts, limited clean water, poor road conditions, and very limited medical facilities. Infrastructure failure is an operational variable that must be planned for.

Security Regulations
Key regulatory requirements for operating security services in Conakry.
Firearms Policy
Private security in Guinea operates in a poorly regulated environment under military governance. Armed security is available through established security companies. The regulatory framework is limited. Due diligence on operator credentials and relationships is particularly important.
Licensing
The formal licensing framework for security companies is limited under current military governance. Established operators with track records in Guinea are preferable to newer entrants.
Foreign Operators
Foreign security personnel can accompany principals. The regulatory environment is less restrictive than in more formally governed states but also less predictable.

Important Warnings
- Guinea is under military rule. The military government's relationship with the mining sector is the dominant political-commercial variable. All business with government-facing dimensions should be conducted with current legal and political intelligence.
- Medical facilities in Conakry are critically limited. Clinique Ambroise Pare provides the best available private care. For any serious medical condition, evacuation to Dakar (1 hour by air) or Casablanca is the standard response. Medical evacuation insurance is mandatory.
- Infrastructure failures (power, water, communications) are routine. All operational planning should include generators, water storage, and satellite communications as contingencies for extended stays.
- Conakry sits on a peninsula. Traffic congestion is severe because of the limited road network into and out of the peninsula. Journey times from the airport to the city centre can be 45 minutes to 2+ hours. Factor this into all logistics planning.
